What's the Best Time of Year to Visit Annecy?

Tucked away in the French Alps, Annecy is often called the “Venice of the Alps” and for good reason. With its winding canals, turquoise lake, charming old town and mountain backdrop, it’s the kind of place that looks good in every season. But depending on what kind of holiday you're dreaming of, the best time to visit might change.

So what is the best time to visit Annecy?

Spring (March – May): Blooms, Bikes & Blissful Weather

As the snow melts off the mountains and the meadows come alive, Annecy in spring is a breath of fresh air, literally. The days start to warm up, flowers are in full bloom, and the city shakes off winter sleepiness.

This is a perfect time for gentle hikes, lakeside picnics, and cycling along the stunning Voie Verte, the traffic-free path that hugs the lake. There’s also fewer crowds this time of year which means better photo ops and a more peaceful feel

Summer (June – August): Sun, Swimming & Serious Fun

If you love the buzz of summer, Annecy absolutely comes alive in these months. It’s the perfect time to come if you want fun lake days, buzzing markets, long evenings by the water, and plenty of gelato.

Water sports are huge in Annecy, so things like swimming, paddleboarding, sailing and even paragliding for the brave-hearted open up during the summer. The lake is wonderfully clean and surprisingly warm in July and August.

You also have events on during summer in Annecy like the Fête du Lac in August, a massive fireworks and light show over the lake that draws people from all over France.

Autumn (September – November): Cosy, Colourful & Crowd-Free

Autumn in Annecy is a bit of a secret treasure. The summer crowds thin out, but the lake is still warm enough for a dip in early September. The surrounding trees turn fiery shades of red and gold, making it a dream for photographers and walkers alike.

You can also enjoy quieter streets, local produce in full swing including all the delicious cheese and wine, and cosy evenings in little bistros. If you're after romance and relaxation, this could be your season.

Winter (December – February): Snowy Magic & Alpine Charm

Annecy doesn’t stop when the snow starts falling, it just changes hats. The old town becomes a winter postcard, with fairy lights, festive markets, and the scent of vin chaud in the air.

And a little bonus is that you’re just a short drive from ski resorts like La Clusaz and Le Grand Bornand. So you can spend your days on the slopes and your evenings strolling along Annecy’s moonlit canal.

The Annecy Christmas market is charming too with its wooden chalets, handmade gifts, twinkling lights, and of course, tartiflette (a delicious Alpine dish).
